Back to school can be a challenging and exciting time for both parents and students alike. But preparing for the upcoming school year can be a bit of a gray area for parents. SkoolLive is here to help. According to Mrs. Evelyn Cheek, a teacher of 31 years at The Powell Center for Play and Ingenuity Magnet Elementary School in Raleigh, NC, the three most important pieces of advice are:
Make sure students are prepared. Students should have all their supplies prepared and laid out each night before school, to ensure nothing is forgotten or overlooked. A good night’s sleep is also crucial. If students are not well rested, they will not be able to focus properly and absorb the information they are being taught throughout the day. It is recommended that elementary school students be in bed by 8:30 pm, middle school students by 10:00 pm, and high schoolers by 11:00 pm.
Ask teachers the right questions. Back to school night (and similar events) is a chance for parents to not only meet teachers but gain some insight into their child’s school routine. It is important for parents to take full advantage, but for most, it is a missed opportunity. This is the time to ask any questions you may have. What is the homework policy? How much homework will my child have? What is the daily schedule like?
Be present. Students need all the help and support they can get, especially from home. Find creative ways to ask them about their day, beyond “how was school?”. Show your student how much you care about them and their day by saying “tell me about something fun you did today” instead. Being present goes beyond simply helping with homework in the evenings and showing interest in their days, however. If your child is struggling in any aspect, whether it is academic, social, or otherwise, it is important to collaborate with teachers to find a solution.
The success of students, particularly young students, can be largely impacted by parents. Make sure yours is a positive impact.
The financial struggle teachers everywhere endure is an issue rapidly gaining national attention. With the general public backing schools and their staff, many brands are beginning to offer more teacher and staff freebies. These deals include everything from personal enjoyment and relaxation, to supplies teachers can utilize in their classrooms.
SkoolLive is always looking for ways to help teachers in any way possible. Not only do we provide fundraising opportunities for schools through our digital kiosks, but we help connect teachers and staff with donors and programs to help lessen the financial burden.

DoSomething.org is a multimillion member, global, non-profit organization with the goal of motivating and empowering young people to make a positive change in the world
SkoolLive is proud to once again partner with DoSomething.org on their new “Your Vote Matters” campaign. For some, especially first time voters, it can be confusing and intimidating to register to vote. Through this campaign, SkoolLive and DoSomething.org have made it simple and quick. If you have just two minutes to spare, you can be registered to vote!
Many people are also under the impression that their vote doesn’t matter, when in reality, every vote counts! The “Your Vote Matters” campaign has set out to change this mindset, and to prove to people everywhere, especially young people, their vote counts and they can make a difference in the world.
Video games, also known as E-Sports, have seen a surge in popularity recently. Many high schools have noticed this rapidly growing phenomenon, and have taken it upon themselves to create a new school sport. E-Sports teams are trending nationwide, but many know little to nothing about them or are even aware of their existence. Having these teams creates an opportunity for students who might be unable to compete in a traditional team setting, and helps increase their sense of school pride.
Colleges and universities across the country have also noticed this trend, and several now have teams and offer virtual sports scholarships. For students who might not be able to further their education without a scholarship, this creates a greater opportunity to attend a college or university. Not everyone is an extremely gifted athlete, or even physically capable of playing. There are those who rely on sports like football to get them into college, but only around 5.8% of all high school football players are picked up by an NCAA team.
The National Association of Collegiate E-Sports (NACE) was founded in 2016 and had its first full season in 2017. The championship of the inaugural season was televised on the Big Ten Network (BTN), a national station dedicated to covering college sports. NACE is rapidly growing, having just twelve participating colleges to begin with, which swelled to 70 by 2018. More schools are joining all the time, and many offer up to 50% off tuition and 50% off room and board to their team members.
Sports and athletics are not the only types of scholarships students can earn. Scholarships range from academic to ancestry to community service and everything in between. Adding E-Sports to the list opens doors for students all over the country.
This fall, SkoolLive has added a College Directory to the digital kiosks in which colleges, junior colleges, and universities all across the nation are featured. In the directory, schools can highlight programs they wish to be found for, including their E-Sports teams. Thus, connecting students to schools, opportunities, and scholarships they might not have been aware of.
Some may believe “brick and mortar” stores to be outdated. Many physical store locations are shutting their doors, due to lack of traffic. It is easy to point fingers and blame the youth of today, but in reality, it may not be completely their fault.
One might think that because Gen Z is such a technology-focused generation, they prefer online shopping, which is in turn leading to the death of physical retail stores: Retail-Mageddon. However, this does not appear to be entirely accurate. While Retail-Mageddon is an actuality for American brands everywhere, according to surveys of today’s teens, most do not have as negative of an outlook on physical stores as preceding generations believe. A large portion of Gen Zers, 66%, report having an equally enjoyable experience shopping in stores as they do online. Online shopping may be easier or more convenient, but going to a store and browsing through selections can be a far more fun experience. Most Gen Zers believe virtual shops have the same selection and pricing as physical stores and say it is just as easy to find what they are looking for in both.
Forbes published an article recently detailing how the physical store isn’t dead, the problem is boring or stale advertising and marketing techniques. A favorite brand of many Gen Z teens is Forever 21. Forever 21 has successfully managed to market to today’s youth by primarily utilizing social media channels, Instagram in particular. The brand’s Instagram page has 14.7 million followers and a very high engagement rate. Forever 21 posts images that appeal to teens and do not necessarily feel like advertisements. Because of this approach, they have been successful in establishing themselves as one of the main trendsetters in mainstream fashion.
Physical retail is not dead. It is possible to market to Gen Z; the problem is static and dated marketing methods, not the stores themselves.
